ESTIMATING BURDEN OF DISEASE THROUGH INDICATORS RELATED TO LIFE EXPECTANCY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Irina ECLEMEA

Abstract

During the period 1998-2008, life expectancy at age 65 increased in Romania, according to Eurostat, 1.7 years for women and 1 year in men but it remains approximately 3.5 years less than the same indicator in the EU.

Romania is situated among the last places among European Union countries in terms of life expectancy to 65 years without activity limitation (Healthy Life Years - HLY).

In European countries, women expect to live over 65 years, significantly more than men with moderate or severe activity limitation, but there are not significant differences between HLY in men and women in the year 2008.

Key words: Burden of disease, HLY
